At The Body Studio we offer the following types of massage therapy.

Swedish Massage

The massage therapist uses firm but gentle pressure to promote relaxation, improve circulation and ease muscle tension. Massage oil is used to facilitate smooth gliding strokes called effleurage. Feel free to state your preference regarding pressure. It can range from firm to light. Swedish massage usually includes some deeper work on areas of specific muscle tension. If you want more intensive work with deeper pressure you should ask for a deep tissue massage.

Swedish Massage is a type of therapy with numerous benefits that are varied from person to person and can have a far reaching impact. Trigger Point Therapy Massage

Trigger Point Therapy uses simple and effective massage therapy  techniques to deactivate myofascial contraction knots that develop in injured or overworked muscles. Sustained pressure and friction on the trigger point help to break up the trigger point restoring circulation to the area. When palpated there may be some discomfort but should not be painful. Trigger point therapy can be combined with Swedish massage to provide and effective and relaxing experience. It is a safe, natural and effective way of dealing directly with trigger points present with fibromyalgia .

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage focuses on realigning deep layers of muscles and connective tissue. Deep tissue is commonly used for areas of the body that have been contracted for long periods of time or suffer from chronic tension.

Deep tissue massage can be uncomfortable, and even painful at times. It is important to communicate with the massage therapist when a level of pain outside your tolerance is reached, or you are unable to breathe deeply in order to relieve such pain. Muscle soreness or pain after a deep tissue massage is common, and usually feels like soreness after a strenuous workout. Ask your therapist if any ice therapy is necessary after a deep tissue session, and, as with any massage session, plenty of water intake is imperative.

Common conditions deep tissue massage is used for: chronic pain, limited mobility or loss in range of motion, fibromyalgia, muscle spasm, osteoarthritis pain, postural defects, recovery from injury (these can include sports injuries, falls, auto accidents), repetitive strain injury (tennis elbow, carpal tunnel).

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone massage dates back to ancient times. Smooth, flat basalt stones are a type of river rock that are rich in iron, so they retain heat and have been smoothed by the river’s current over time. The stones are heated in an electrical heating unit within a certain temperature range, then placed on certain points of the body and used to gently massage areas of chronic pain and tension.

A hot stone session lasts 80 minutes, but we ask that you allow 90 minutes if scheduling appointments or meetings afterwards

Hot stone massage is well suited to people who tend to feel cold or for people who have muscle tension but prefer a lighter massage. The benefits of classic massage therapy are the same for hot stone massage, but two-fold. The heat penetrates muscles, allowing the therapist to work through chronic tension without using deep pressure.

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy massage also called prenatal massage is massage therapy specifically tailored to meet the needs of the expectant mother. The mother's body is positioned and supported using pillows. This ensures comfort and safety for both mother and baby. Unscented massage oil is used to provide gentle glide over the muscles. It can be a healthy alternative to medications and sometimes alleviate symptoms that persist when pain medications cannot be taken during pregnancy.

Pregnancy massage has been found to: Decrease swelling in arms and legs | Relieve aches and pains | Improve sleep | Relieve anxiety and depression | Can be a healthy alternative to pain medication

Contraindications:
Due to an increased risk of blood clots during pregnancy, deep tissue massage is not recommended. Massage during the first trimester should be avoided if there is a history of miscarriage. The abdomen is not massaged during pregnancy. After 20 weeks gestation the mother should not lay flat on her back. She is supported with pillows in a side-lying position instead. Consult your doctor before receiving massage therapy if you are having a high risk pregnancy.
